Goldfields galloper Inject The Venom upheld local pride when he repelled Perth raiders to win the Listed $130,000 XXXX Gold Kalgoorlie Cup (2300m) on Sunday.
In a thrilling three-way finish, Inject The Venom, trained by Peter Fernie and ridden by Randy Tan, burst through between runners in the shadows of the post.
Starting at $16.70 on the tote, Inject The Venom defeated Gloryland by a nose with a further short half-head to third placegetter, First Affair.
The Sean Casey-trained Gloryland, who was well-backed into second favouritism, bravely held on after going to the front and leading for jockey, Simone Altieri.
The chestnut gelding completed his third close finish in a fortnight after a second in the Coolgardie Cup (1760m) and a third in the Boulder Cup (2100m).
First Affair, one of two starters for trainer, Adam Durrant, ran on strongly from the back of the field. Stable mate At The Ready ran fourth.
Inject The Venom, who took his record to six wins and eight placings from 36 starts for stake earnings of $167, 472, is owned by former Kalgoorlie Boulder Racing Club Chairman and long-time Fernie client, Andrew Inglis.
Fernie said he was delighted to have shared Kalgoorlie’s premier race with a close ally.
“I’ve always wanted to win this race for Andrew, who has been my biggest supporter and is my best mate,” Fernie said.
Inject The Venom was the signature victory for Fernie who also prepared four other winners on the programme.
He claimed the Kalgoorlie Cup for the second time after True Gold won in 2014.
