A History Of The Northam Stakes

NORTHAM STAKES/SPRINT BACKGROUND

• The Northam Stakes was first run in 2007 and won by Certain Gold, a five year-old gelding trained by Kevin Anderson and ridden by John Claite.  Stringmaster and Dee Picked filled the minor placings.
• The race was titled the Northam Sprint from its inception in 2007 until 2012 when it was renamed the Northam Stakes.
• In 2007 and 2008, when won by Certain Gold and Money Exchange, prepared by Trevor Andrews, the race was staged over 1100m.
• From 2009 it has been run over 1100m, the first winner at that distance was the Jim Taylor-trained, Vain Crusader.
• Vain Raider’s 2009 victory when he stopped the clock at 1.01.75sec. has set the 1100m benchmark that exists today.
