Quality galloper Ambiente will target feature races after he made a sensational return to racing in the Seacorp Handicap (1000m) at Ascot on Saturday.
Making light work of his 61kg impost, the Trade Fair five-year-old, stormed home from fourth on the corner for jockey Lucy Warwick to score by ¾ of a length.
Alpha Sky rocketed home from the tail of the field to finish second ahead of Shackleton.
Backed from $3.80 to $2.60 favouritism, the Liz Strempel-trained Ambiente improved his record to six wins and two placings from 10 starts.
“He did well didn’t he,” Strempel said.
“We will see how he pulls up, but he may end up in the Summer Scorcher if everything is okay with him.
“He is a big horse with a heavy action and sometimes his feet can worry him. He can jar up on a hard track.”
Ambiente ended the day on a far more positive note for Strempel after she was involved in a float accident earlier in the morning.
“It has been a stressful day, but this certainly helps,” she said.
Warwick, who has never been beaten on Ambiente, said despite lumping top weight, the gelding travelled like a winner throughout the race.
“He was really impressive and couldn’t have asked for a better run,” Warwick said.
“The speed was on, he was off the fence and got a beautiful cart up.
“He let down great and carried the 61kg like it was nothing.”
The race was robbed of some gloss after Double Jeopardy, who was challenging Ambiente for favouritism, was scratched at the barriers.
The Listed Summer Scorcher (1000m) will be run on January 5.
