Top young jockey Joe Azzopardi says his decision on which horse to ride in next Saturday week’s Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) was a difficult one.
Azzopardi had the choice of two top mounts in Western Australia’s most prestigious two-year-old race, but has opted to ride David Harrison’s Chix Pic.
Complicating matters for Azzopardi was last Friday’s Good Friday meeting at Ascot when he partnered Chix Pic and Agent Pippa to brilliant front running wins.
Chix Pic put paid to his rivals with ease in the Listed Perth Stakes (1100m), clearing away to defeat his nearest rival, Platoon, by 2 ½ lengths.
Agent Pippa bounced back to the winner’s list to defeat highly-rated Assetro in the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes (1100m), scoring by a length.
Chix Pic, who remains unbeaten in two career starts, ran the Perth Stakes in 1.05.69sec., 0.27 faster than Agent Pippa in the Gimcrack Stakes.
“It was a tough call because they are both good horses,” Azzopardi said.
“But I think there is a slight concern with Agent Pippa over 1200m.
“I believe Chix Pic will be better suited over the distance.
“I also think he is improving with each run and is more versatile.
“Agent Pippa is a bit more one dimensional.
“Chix Pic will take a lot out of the run on Friday.
“I think he is a classy horse who is on the way up.”
Chix Pic is rated a $7 chance with Tabtouch. Heading the market is Lady Cosmology at $3.60.
Assetro ($5) and Agent Pippa ($6) are also in single figure odds.
Chix Pic headlines David Harrison’s two-pronged Karrakatta Plate attack, but he warns Emerald Rose can also run a bold race in the juvenile feature.
The Patronize filly has yet to shed her maiden status in seven starts, but has recorded several solid races behind her against top Karrakatta Plate hopefuls
In March she ran second to Assetro and in the Gimcrack Stakes she was involved in a bunching finish, running 2 1/3 lengths 7th to Agent Pippa.
“I thought it was a really good run,” Harrison told Tabradio.
“Troy (Turner) said if she got a run she finishes second.
“He is excited and upbeat.
“I think she is a live chance.”
