“I got a phone call from Dubai the other day and I’m keen to go there now in March,” trainer Robert Heathcote told Sky Thoroughbred Central after Buffering bettered the race record held by Ortensia.

The $US 2 million Golden Shaheen is run over 1200m on dirt at the Dubai World Cup meeting.

Settled in front after 50m, Buffering enjoyed an uncontested lead to the home turn where Damian Browne made his move.

Clear 250m out, Buffering ($2.50) was being driven out by Browne holding all challengers, the only serious chaser Watermans Bay ($9) closing from well back but falling one length short at the finish, the trip completed in record time of 1:08.17.

“He’s a marvel, he really is a wonderful animal and Damian just rode him beautiful,” Heathcote said.

“He didn’t commit everything early and left something in the tank and the horse was too strong.

“I saw the other horse flashing late but I knew the post was coming.

“I was hoping he’d have a length on them around the home turn but he’s done it and won another Group I.”

Buffering has now won six times at the highest level and is the fifth horse to win two runnings of the Winterbottom. The eight-year-old son of Mossman advanced his earnings to $5,842,366.
