Perth mare Dainty Tess stormed home over the top of a trio of high-level performers to claim the Group III RN Irwin Stakes (1100m).
The Dan Morton-trained Dainty Tess had posted 12 wins in 33 starts in her home state but a roundabout trip to Adelaide that contained a stopover in Melbourne failed to dull the daughter of War Chant’s finishing burst.
Leading local rider Jamie Kah guided Dainty Tess ($9.50) from beyond midfield on the home turn to beat Group I Winterbottom Stakes winner Viddora ($2.45 fav) by a half-length while last year’s Robert Sangster Stakes winner Secret Agenda ($5.50) was third. The Oakleigh Plate runner-up Snitty Kitty was fourth.
“She had travelled well and was pinging this morning so, without being cocky, I was confident,” Morton told Racing Victoria.
“We obviously came with the Sangster (Stakes) in mind for fillies and mare then off to Brisbane. She rarely lets us down.”
