Saturday’s Listed Scenic Blast Stakes (1200M) at Ascot is named in honour of one of Australia’s best sprinters.

The Scenic gelding amassed eight wins, eight seconds and four thirds from 31 career starts with stake earnings of $2 122, 046.

Scenic Blast debuted at Ascot in 2007 and succeeded at his very first start with victory in the Listed Supremacy Stakes (1100m).

His signature wins came in 2009 when he won the Group 1 Newmarket (1000m) and Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne.

The Dan Morton-trained son of Scenic completed a Group 1 trifecta when he won the King’s Stand Stakes (1000m) at Royal Ascot.

Scenic Blast’s outstanding achievements were recognised when he was crowned Australian Horse of the Year in 2009.

Three years later he received local honours when inducted into the Western Australian Racing Industry Hall Of Fame.

Since his retirement in 2012, Scenic Blast has joined Racing and Wagering Western Australia’s (RWWA) Off The Track, a program that supports retired race horses.

The Scenic Blast Stakes was first run in 2013 and took over naming rights from the Australia Day Stakes and WATC Stakes.

Notable winners since the inception of the race in 1974 include Alpine Wind (1976), Dark Beau (1991), Starstruck (1995), Jacks Or Better (1997) and Marasco (2007).

George Daly has won the race on four times: James Street (1978), Surtee (1993), Quadrant (1996) and Jacks Or Better.

Two time winners include:

Fred Kersley: Marasco and Divine Calling (2017),

Darren McAuliffe: Impressive Stats (2005) and Rebel King (2018).

Colin Webster: Nabeel (1977) and Hey Cabby (1983).

John Price: Noble Sky (2000) and Twilight Spy (2004).

Paul Harvey has ridden four winners: Tackle The Pak (1991), Sounds Of Legend (1998), Lady Belvedere (2002) & Impressive Stats (2005).

Peter Knuckey (3): Surtee (1993), Jacks Or Better & Noble Sky (2000).

Jason Whiting (3): Wolf Pack (1999), Twilight Spy (2004) and Dueton (2014).

Geldings have dominated the race with 29 winners including nine out of the past 10 winners.

Mares have won on eight occasions, the previous Cool Trade (2015).

Six horses have been successful and two colts, Island Gossip (1990) & Surtee (1993).

Barrier four has had more wins than any other with eight victories. Four of those wins have come in successive years when Noble Sky (2000), Exit Lane (2001), Scuffs (2008) and Dante’s Volonte (2009) won their respective races.

Barrier seven has recorded seven wins while gates one and three have won six races each.

Barrier two, 13, 14, 15 and 16 have not recorded wins in the Scenic Blast Stakes.

Five and four-year-olds dominate the race with 19 and 13 winners respectively.

Six-year-olds have recorded six wins and three-year-olds three wins.

The oldest horses to win the Scenic Blast have been seven-year-olds: Tackle The Pak, Senate Lease (2003), Casper Cowboy (2011) and Werd (2012).

Divine Calling (2017) and Marasco (2007), are the highest weighted horses to win the Scenic Blast with 59kg.
