Racing and Wagering Western Australia will introduce a maiden race on Saturday metropolitan race programmes for the remainder of the Belmont Park season.
This initiative is in response to the significant decline in field sizes experienced at the first two Saturday metropolitan meetings of the new racing season.
RWWA Manager Thoroughbred Racing said “It is obvious that there is currently insufficient demand for eight metropolitan prime racing opportunities each week. Although we have historically avoided programming maiden races on Saturday’s, it is imperative that field sizes are improved in the short term by bringing additional horses in to race at our premium race meetings”.
The newly introduced maiden races will be restricted to horses aged four-years-old and upwards and carry prizemoney of $30,000. Four-years-old horses who are Westspeed nominated will also be eligible for a ‘first win’ consolation bonus of $5,000.
Race programmes from Saturday, 20 August have been amended to accommodate the maiden race, while maintaining an eight-race programme – changes are detailed below.
The metropolitan prime maiden races will be in place until the conclusion of the Belmont Park season on Saturday, 1 October.
