The 2014 winner Protectionist has 1.5kg more than the defending Melbourne Cup champion Prince Of Penzance in the weight for the 2016 edition of Australia’s greatest race.

Protectionist has returned to somewhere near his best form in Germany this season with his performances earning the Andreas Wohler-trained galloper the 58kg equal top weight with the Aidan O’Brien team member Order Of St George.

Prince Of Penzance has 56.5kg along with The BMW winner Preferment while Doomben Cup winner Our Ivanhowe has 56kg along with international entrants Big Orange and Erupt.

Japanese runner Curren Mirotic has 55.5kg as does The United Stakes while North American entry Da Big Hoss will carry 55kg if he makes the trip to Australia for the $6 million Melbourne Cup.

Irish St Leger winner Wicklow Brave has 55kg while Derby winners Tarzino and Tavago will carry 54kg.

Godolphin runners Hartnell and Scottish have 55 and 54.5kg respectively.
