Siblings Patrick and Michelle Payne combined to win the Gold Coast Magic Millions Sprint (1100m) with Husson Eagle in track record time on Saturday.
Husson Eagle, trained by Patrick and ridden by Michelle, stopped the clock at 1 minute and 1.74 seconds which was 0.03 seconds faster than Whittington’s track record time from 2014.
A thrilling duel over the concluding stages of the race ended in Husson Eagle ($9) shaking off Mark Kavanagh’s Wild Rain ($4.20) to score by a length. Finishing another two lengths back in third place was Le Cordon Bleu ($9) from the Hawkes Racing stable.
Patrick Payne, a former jockey himself before making the transition into training, described his sister’s ride on the four-year-old gelding as “perfect.”
“Michelle does a great job,” Payne said. “This horse loves having that little suck up and use the turn of foot that he’s got.
“We’ll enjoy this for now, we didn’t have any grand plans for him as he’s only an 80-rated horse so we’ll just set the right plans in place for him.”
Favourite Didntcostalot, prepared by Tony Gollan, finished five lengths astern of the winner in sixth.
