Fathnoxious had to pull out all stops at Northam last month but her class prevailed when she withstood a strong challenge from Kamballie to score a confidence-boosting win.
It marked the end of a winless campaign for the Fath mare with her previous five attempts yielding one placing, a third to Resonates in the Listed Matchmaker Classic (1430m) at Ascot.
“It was a tough win as she over raced throughout,” said trainer, Shane Quilty on TAB Radio.
“She was there to be beaten but fought them off which was a really good effort.
“She has had a few niggles this preparation but I think we have her right.”
Fathnoxious returns to Perth on Wednesday and Quilty insists if she repeats her Northam output she will be hard to toss in the WAROA Handicap (1700m).
“If she reproduces her Northam run she will be very hard to roll,” said Quilty.
“I am quietly confident she will go very close.
“She appears to be back in the zone again.”
Fathnoxious, who has drawn gate six, will be in the hands of Troy Turner. She lumps equal top weight of 59.5kg.
Her biggest threat could come from Quintessence who has performed soundly against top opposition in two runs back this campaign
The Shaft five-year-old chased hard when second to the impressive Tanjier at Ascot and filled the same placing behind Cosmic Storm.
Cosmic Storm franked the form when she charged home to take out a maiden feature win in the Belmont Oaks (2000m) on Saturday.
Quintessence carries 58kg for Shaun McGruddy and in a field of 12 rivals she has drawn pole position in barrier one.
Alana Williams is banking on a favourable barrier draw and a reduction in distance to help her filly Clobberetta break the shackles in Westspeed 3YO Handicap (1200m).
The daughter of Exceed And Excel turned for home in front two weeks ago but just faded over the final 150m metres to be placed fourth and 1 ½ lengths shy of Star Bay.
“She didn’t quite run the 1400m out strongly after pulling a little bit so we are coming back in distance to see if that can help her,” said Williams on TAB Radio.
“She has been pretty consistent this preparation and is knocking on the door for sure.
“The barrier draw definitely helps her.”
Top apprentice Jordan Turner partners Clobberetta from barrier three.
