Samizdat will target an iconic Group 1 race in Melbourne as his first major goal of the year.
In a bold move by the Chris Gangemi stable, the talented four-year-old will launch his autumn campaign in the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 7.
“That is his target race at this stage,” said stable representative, Michael Gangemi.
“It was actually suggested by Damien Oliver when he was in Perth during the Ascot carnival.
“In discussion he believed Samizdat would be suited at Flemington and a race like the Newmarket first-up.
“We were considering the All Star Mile, but it’s a bit too soon for him.
“We won’t rush him and will take a patient approach, but at this stage, the Newmarket is the target race.”
Samizdat, the $325,000 sale topper at the Perth Magic Millions sale (2017), has five wins and a third from nine starts.
In November he claimed a career-best win in the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m), defeating subsequent Railway Stakes winner, Regal Power.
The son of Not A Single Doubt won the Magic Millions WA 3YO Trophy (1200m) at his third career start at Pinjarra almost 12-months ago.
Samizdat will aim to emulate the feat of Redkirk Warrior who became the first horse in a century to win the Newmarket when he defeated Voodoo Lad (2017).
