Karlee was born into the Western Australian racing scene. Karlee, also known as Karls, is the daughter of former Jockey Michael O’Heare and is the sister of two brothers Michael and David.

Karls grew up in the stables of Ascot watching her father ride and then later showing support for her brother David who became an apprentice jockey to the master himself Colin Webster.

Over time Karls has remained in the industry and currently works for successful stable Impressive Racing and has ownership shares in 2 racehorses.

The popular and prominent horsewoman is a recognised character amongst the racing community and has established herself as passionate and hard working, and is a genuine advocate for the racing industry.

Her involvement and dedication to racing is now taking her on the journey of red light therapy and sports massage for race horses.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART ABOUT WA RACING?

I think the fact that we are a bit smaller in WA, it’s not so much a numbers game and you get to interact with owners more one on one and really enjoy the racing experience all together.

WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE HORSE?

So hard to choose a favourite as I love them all for different reasons, but Ram Jam gave me my first winner and city winner as an owner. He was very good to me and is pretty special.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST THRILL IN RACING?

Probably being a part of the ride Impressive Jeuney took us on, being a multiple Listed Winner, G3 winner and G1 placed. She was very tough and definitely a favourite.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE IN THE RACING INDUSTRY AND WHY?

Anyone who has worked hard to get where they are or where they’re going. We have so many knowledgeable people throughout our industry.

WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY AS A KID?

Strapping Catalystic, my very first winner as a strapper for good family friend Shane Plumb and having my brother ride it.

WHERE IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO?

I’m not much of a traveller but I would like to visit major racetracks in the world

IF YOU COULD HAVE 5 PEOPLE OVER FOR DINNER WHO WOULD THEY BE?

Prince Harry, Ross McDonald, Ethnee Holmes a Court, Mick Fanning and Ahn Do.

IF YOU WERENT INVOLVED IN RACING WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

I couldn’t imagine not being involved in racing. Horses is all I have ever been interested in.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE CHANGE IN RACING?

I think we are doing great with our Off the Track and Rehome a racehorse programs, so possibly build on that with more educational seminars for people to learn.
