Geraldton stalwart Gordon Spowart claimed a remarkable 18th Geraldton Trainer’s premiership last week.

Spowart ended a stellar 2013-14 season on 98 points, 12 clear of runner-up and defending champion Kim Anderson.

Willie Parker filled third placing with 78 points.

The race for premiership honours went right down to the wire with only one win separating Spowart and Anderson before Thursday’s season-ending meeting.

Spowart clinched victory early and set up his winning break when Flirtinaskirt skipped away to an easy two length win in the opening race.

Eddie McGuire’s Thunder Express was named Geraldton Horse of the Year after winning five races and being placed on six occasions from his 13 starts this campaign.

The Canny Lad gelding finished two points clear of the Murray Wallace-trained High Appeal with Cranky Dancer, prepared by Willie Parker, finishing third.

Renee Forrest capped off an outstanding season with a winning double: Leading Jockey and Champion Apprentice.

Forrest claimed her best win when she steered home Fundamental for trainer Kim Anderson in last month’s $70,000 Batavia Sprint.
