Veteran trainer Colin Webster is adamant he won’t be rushed on Properantes who is no certainty to contest the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) at Ascot on January 2.
Properantes boosted his claims for the Perth Cup after a strong finish to defeat Bedamijo on Saturday, his first at 2200m, but Webster remains cautious.
“He is nominated but there is a long way to go yet,” Webster said on Tabradio.
“He really is still 12-months away from being a cup horse but a lot can happen.
“He is still a big rangy fellow who is a little immature.
“I won’t push him and we will see how he goes in the St Leger.
“He will have to be impressive to be worthy of going into the cup.
“If I were a punter I wouldn’t be backing him at this stage.”
Properantes, a son of Danehill Express, is 13 starts into his career that has netted six wins and five placings for stakes in excess of $200,000.
A feature win last March when he defeated Muskets At Dawn by a half-length in the Listed Raconteur Stakes (1500m) a major highlight.
The ATA-WA St Leger (2200m) will be run at Ascot on December 23.
